Introduction: In this article, the reasons for the migration from the face-to-face modality of the SPA1003course (Beginners of Spanish) of the University of Guyana to remote emergency education in
the middle of the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year are addressed. Theoretical considerations about virtual and online education are also dealt with. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of remote teaching in contrast with face-to-face classes. Methodology: The empirical method used was the documentary analysis, which made it possible to collect information on the results of the evaluations performed by the students before and after the implementation of the remote modality. Descriptive statistics, specifically the percentage analysis and the arithmetic mean, allowed the processing of the collected numerical data. Results: After comparing the grades of the students in the first semester of both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 courses, as well as in the first and second semesters of 20192020, the students of the remote modality obtained higher grades than those of the face-to-face modality. Conclusions: Higher grades are not synonymous with better results; hence, future research is suggested
