Este artículo tiene como objetivo profundizar en las condiciones que se desarrolló la educación en Trinidad en las décadas precedentes a la Revolución de Yara, mediante el esclarecimiento de su papel en la polémica sostenida desde finales de la década del 30 del siglo XIX entre las dos concepciones del desarrollo de la sociedad, la cultura y el conocimiento. Para ello se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de las condiciones de la época y se examinaron fundamentalmente los artículos de El Correo de Trinidad (en lo adelante El Correo). Se demuestra como el sistema de educación, concebido y sustentado en las condiciones de la ciudad, convertida en plaza fuerte del poder colonial, no reflejó en toda su dimensión esta polémica y otros factores resultaron más influyentes en la conformación del pensamiento independentista entre los trinitarios. Este trabajo constituye un aporte a la historia de la Pedagogía en el territorio y a nivel de país.
The main purpose of this research is to deepen in the conditions into which education was developed in Trinidad in the decades before Yara Revolution, that would be reached through the clarification of education´s roll in the polemic between two conceptions about the development of the society, the culture and the knowledge that existed since the end of the 30s of the XIX century. Thus, a bibliographic review of the conditions of the time, checking, mainly, the articles of the newspaper named El Correo de Trinidad (that changed its name into El Correo). It was proved how the education system, sustained and based on the conditions of the city that became the central colonial power, did not show this polemic and that some others factors were more influent in the formation of the independence thinking of people from Trinidad. This research contributes to clear up more about the history of Pedagogy in our city.
