Se presenta un estudio que aborda el tema de la historia de la educación en Sancti Spíritus, específicamente acerca de la labor desempeñada por las mujeres que se dedicaron a la enseñanza. Su objetivo es revelar los principales aportes a la educación realizados por las primeras educadoras y su contribución al despertar de la conciencia nacional y la cubanía, en la etapa colonial, hasta entrada la neocolonia. En orden cronológico, se inicia con una breve caracterización de la educación en este territorio en sentido general, seguidamente se hace referencia a las figuras femeninas del magisterio en los poblados de Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad,Yaguajay, Cabaiguán y finalmente se esboza la repercusión del legado de estas maestras en las siguientes generaciones.
A study that deals with the history of education in Sancti Spíritus is presented, specifically about the work performed by women who were dedicated to teaching. The objective is to reveal the main contributions to education of the first educators and their contribution to the awakening of national consciousness and Cubanism, in the colonial stage, until arriving to the neocolonism. In a chronological order, the article begins with a brief characterization of education in this territory, in a general sense; afterwards, refers to female figures of the magisterium in the towns of Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad, Yaguajay, Cabaiguán, and, finally, outlines the impact of of these teachers’ legacy in the following generations.
