Abstract
Introduction: Early detection of common kidney conditions in elderly dogs allows the veterinarian to stabilize renal function and prevent rapid progression, high morbidity, and mortality. Objective: To diagnose the incidence of renal disorders in geriatric dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) in the city of Ibarra, using ultrasound and laboratory analysis. Methods: The research was conducted at the Dr. Pets Veterinary Clinic in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. Thirty-seven canines aged between 7 and 14 years were evaluated. Each patient underwent B-mode and Doppler ultrasound studies on both kidneys. Blood samples were collected via cephalic vein venipuncture to evaluate the renal profile and hematological diagnosis. The (International Renal Interest Society) staging classification was considered. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 software. Results: 27% of the analyzed samples showed ultrasonic renal disorders (renal asymmetry, nephroliths, and dystrophic mineralization) without changes in the hemogram and blood biochemistry; 5% presented biochemical alterations without changes in the ultrasound study; and 24% were categorized as healthy with no alterations in the hemogram, serum biochemistry, or ultrasound. Animals with chronic renal failure represented 8% of the total studied sample. Conclusions: B-mode and Doppler ultrasound, in combination with hematological and biochemical analysis, are valuable tools for diagnosing acute and chronic renal failure in canines.
