Abstract
Introduction: The national education system prioritizes the continuous training of its teachers so they can contribute to the holistic development of students in acquiring various skills, habits, and abilities. Scientific literature refers to this training through the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, which constitute a fundamental pillar of the educational inclusion sought under the third educational improvement initiative. Objective: To implement methodological workshops aimed at preparing teachers for the application of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems in students with intellectual disabilities. Materials and Methods: The diagnostic process began with teacher interviews to assess their level of preparation regarding the application of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication system. Nine teachers were selected. Results and Discussion: The diagnosis identified the main strengths and weaknesses of the teachers. Based on this, training was finalized focusing on the application of Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems using media and resources, as well as participation in the completion of learning tasks and guidance activities. Conclusions: The training of teachers for the application of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication system is fundamentally based on the relevant theory and its functions, specifically: educational, formative, developmental, and supportive; due to its importance in serving students; as well as on the theoretical foundations related to the topic in question.
