Abstract
This research paper is based on an analysis of political labour of Marcos García de Castro, of this autonomist leader from Sancti Spiritus, since he incorporated to the Mambí army during the Revolution of 1868 until his death in 1909. In this paper, his ambiguous position between an inconsistent independentism and a very convinced auntonomism is quite well stated, so as the support he offered to Spain, even betraiying his independence ideas during the process of national liberation, although contradictoriously, he fought in favour of people of the region and kept an anti-annexionist position when the United States intervention in 1898 and1899. As a conclusion, it is good to say that Marcos García didn’t have a well defined feeling of Cuban nationality, because for him Cuba could be developed inside the Mother Land. It seems to be that, he got this conception since a negative Martí’s valuation about the Big War in which he only expressed about his errors. He saw in the autonomism, the only possible solution that could evolve, in a long term, towards independence avoiding the destructive war and annexation with the United States of America. This paper, can be considered a good supporting material for teaching or even complete material for Local History
