Durante el período de la Guerra de los Diez Años, algunas figuras del magisterio espirituano se fueron al campo de batalla y arrastraron tras ellos sus compañeros y alumnos, otros tuvieron la posibilidad de inculcar el patriotismo desde sus aulas y continuaron su labor. En este proceso armado fue donde se formó la nacionalidad cubana, luchando unidos negros, blancos, hacendados, intelectuales, pobres y esclavos por un mismo ideal. En Sancti Spíritus se pone de manifiesto, como una particularidad, el papel del magisterio en la dirección del pensamiento patriótico. Este acercamiento a la labor de los patriotas Serafín Sánchez y Honorato del Castillo, tiene el objetivo de destacar la influencia del magisterio en la conformación del pensamiento patriótico cubano, así como la participación de los maestros en el proceso de liberación nacional y abordar particularidades de la historia de la educación en la etapa comprendida desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX hasta 1895.
During the War of the Ten Years, some figures of the Sancti Spíritus magisterium went to the battlefield and dragged their companions and students after them; others had the opportunity to instill patriotism from their classrooms and continued their work. In this armed process Cuban nationality was formed, fighting together blacks, whites, landlords, intellectuals, poor and slaves for the same ideal. In Sancti Spíritus, the role of the magisterium in the direction of patriotic thought becomes evident as a peculiarity. This approach to the work of the patriots Serafín Sánchez and Honorato del Castillo has the objective of highlighting the influence of the teacher in the shaping of Cuban patriotic thinking, as well as the participation of teachers in the national liberation process and address particularities of history of education in the period from the second half of the nineteenth century to 1895
