Most tourist destinations have faced, during their development, high variability in statistics and positive and negative effects caused by tourism. For Cuba, tourism is a vital sector in its economy and interpreting the historical development of this sector and the external and internal transformations that have impacted it can be helpful for its future management. The objective of this article is to conduct a study concerning the socio-economic transformation processes that have taken place in Cuba and internationally in the last 80 years and how they have influenced the results of Cuban touristic activity. A documentary and experiential analysis as well as some exchanges with actors from Yaguajay were vital to carry out this study. Five stages in Cuban tourism development during the last 80 years were identified among the most relevant research results. In addition, the results in all stages have been influenced by socio-economic transformations that have occurred at a national or international level. Furthermore, in the 90's began a steady growth in the tourist sector statistics which predicted the arrival of about 15 million tourists by 2030. Nonetheless, the economic sanctions imposed by the United States, in addition to the Sars-Cov 2 pandemic have limited the estimated growth.
